Day 38 - Out and back

Just another day out on the trail. Today was a 4miler, 2 miles out and 2miles back. The runs all seem pretty routine these days. I like that fact that I'm familiar with the route I take but it's getting a bit monotonous. I guess I could pick a route up the hill but than that would a little extra work now wouldn't it. So I wondering when I should start putting in come hill work outs in combination with my run? Any suggestions?

  1. Hi Laura, yes, of course I have suggestions!!! lol. With your physical fitness, I would say that you are more than ready for a few little hills in your running regime. The fact is you will find these add some diversity in your run and actually make it more interesting. Also, I did mention Fartlek running to get your times down even farther, faster. They are short, real fast bursts of speed @ about 80 to 90 per cent effort for about 50 to 100 yards to start with and then working them up to 100 to 200 yards. They really, really increase your speed. Also, of course, they add diversity to your monotonous runs. You really will feel less bored and more appreciatve of your results. It's like taking your running to a whole different level.
Also, Laura, as your distances are now all going to be longer, both your short run and your long run, this would be a good time to think about a more long term look at your running routes. You should incorporate your long and short runs in the same route, which by the way, now must include hills and valleys, for diversity to strengthen those other muscles which are not getting worked on the flat. More later. Have fun in the sun. Cheers, Dad
