Day 6 - just another day on the trail

Saturday morning and I think everyone had the same idea this morning because there was tonnes of people on the trail this morning, cyclist, runners, walkers with their dogs and 100s of birds signing a morning tune. Even though today was an easy 3 miler, all I could think about was that I have to run 5 miles tomorrow. Funny what we think about when we run. I don't run with music but I think I will do up a playlist of favorite tunes for tomorrow's run so I don't get bored. Today I ran 3.04miles, 4.89km in 32:54, Avg Pace 6.44km and burned 398 cal. I dedicated a good 20mins before and after my run to stretch. Now I feel great! I'll spend the rest of day mentally preparing for my long run tomorrow.

  1. Hi Laura, well I guess we are starting to have fun in the sun!!! Your doing great. Today I would like to talk to you a little bit about the pros and cons of running with or without music.
If you are out on the trails or streets an watch runners as they go by you can usually tell the difference between a runner and a runner by whether they have ear phones or not. Why???
    For very grave reasons:

    (1) If you are running a lot, and you will be if you are training for a marathon, and you are running on the city streets, it is very dangerous!!! Now, I don’t mean to scare you unfairly. However, Laura, when you are running in the streets the motorist doesn’t always pay attention and sometimes neither does the runner, as we do all make mistakes. Therefore, it is important for you to be attentive and see and hear everything going on around you. There are many occasions where I avoided an accident because I heard some ones brakes just before they were about to hit me. If you can hear it, it only takes a split second to sidestep a car and save your life. So, NO, don’t get in the habit of using ear phones. It is much better to plan out your days, to-do list, practice your speech, or just enjoy the birds singing or watch the sun rising.
    (2) If you are on the trail running, for safety reasons again, it is important to see and hear everything around you. Just this morning, I heard a large dog come running up behind me very quickly. It had got loose from it’s owner and there was no owner in sight! I was going across an open parking lot behind the aquatic centre to the trail, there was no where and no time for me to avoid being charged by the dog, which I estimated weighed about 80 pounds. I’m wearing a T-shirt and a pair of shorts. So the question is, what is one suppose to do if one is to save there brand-new shorts??? Are you ready? Well, okay, I will tell you then. Turn around and charge the dog as it is coming at you full speed!!! I had no where to go---what else could I do. It worked, but if I did not hear the dog coming in the last seconds he would have definitely bit me as I could see that was his intent. I still don’t know where he came from as I was in an open parking lot??? Also, Laura, when you are running on the trail and you see a man coming toward you it would be a good defensive move to run on the opposite side of the trail that he is on. I know that is not much, but again, it might give you that little edge to side step an attempt for him to try something.

Anyway, Honey, I don’t wish to scare you but I do want you to do everything possible to protect yourself in this unpredictable world of ours. Keep up the mission. Love you. Cheers, Dad

  2. Ya I vote no music, can't do it even if I wanted to...can't run well if I can't hear myself breathing. WOW, that's a crazy dog story. All suggestions and points noted.
