Today was an early rising...I was attending a CAPS meeting at 8:30am this morning so I had to run with the birds again. Is was very cold, windy and hamstring didn't like the conditions it had to endure however everything else was strong and lively which made for a pretty good run 3miles, 4.83km in 30:00, avg pace of 6:13/km and burned 402 cal. (still need to get time down) I think the rule of thumb is 2 weeks to develop strong running lungs or is that your lungs will keep their efficiency up for 2 weeks after you stopping to run? I'm sure one of the running experts reading this blog will enlighten us on the issue! Whatever the case, I can feel my body getting stronger. I yearn for my run in the morning and know that the morning is my time to run, because if I don't get it done before I start my day it will never get done. So I've found my formula, get up, get dress, stretch, water and run...no matter what I have on the go that day or no matter how busy I will be. #1 is get the run done and out of the way.
I started thinking about what the conditions will be like on marathon day. As you know I train along the Ottawa river and some mornings it's quit windy and cold. The running conditions actually reminds me a lot of the PEI Marathon route and the weather along the Gulf of St. Lawrence. I'm not one for the cold but I'm sure I'll learn how to layer my clothing and prepare for a marathon in varied weather. The more I think about running a marathon the more I realize I need to research my facts and consult good old Dad for advice in all areas. All I know is I keep envisioning me hand in hand with my Dad, as we cross the finish line...Dad hope you are training as hard as I am. Love you! Long run tomorrow :)

Hi Laura,
ReplyDeleteGreat to see you gritting your teeth and getting out there anyway. When you know that it is going to be cold, rainy or windy cold, you should rub some vaseline on your hamstrings as that will keep the cold off them and they won't tighten up so much. Your training along the Ottawa River will be absolutely perfect for the same conditions you will experience on the Island (PEI) in the fall.
Just a thought for you. When running in the morning it is more damp, cold, windy and not at all sunny sometimes. So what I like to do, for two reasons, is try to run at noonish, just before or just after (before I eat of course).(1) Your body needs to get use to the heat just in case the Marathon Day is a hot one. That can happen more often then you might think. Your body needs to be prepared for all conditions which really helps your confidence. You must know you can run in the heat just as much the cold. Otherwise it is too easy to quit. That word was never in my vocabulary in any of the marathons I ran. Although, as you know Laura, you were there at the finish line in the Ottawa Marathon when I crossed the line. That was my 6th. marathon in five months and I "hit the wall" at mile 25.5. Totally dehydrated and the temperature that afternoon was 110 degrees. So to be strong you must be prepared for anything in order to have the courage to stay the COURSE. ( little pun there. lol).
(2) It is really refreshing to change your regime which adds a little spice to your life. Not to mention, I love running in the sun, even if it is hot sometimes. Also, it doesn't hurt to help improve your tan a little bit!!! lol
(3) And yes, Dear, it will be nice to know that we are prepared to run the distance and cross the finish line together. Now I have to warn you that in order for me not to have to run another marathon this fall I must get under 4 hr. and 15 min. to qualify for the BOSTON MARATHON. So for those of you who might be guessing what our MARATHON TIME is, this just might be your greatest tip of all. My quess is 4 hr. and 12 min.
Cheers all,
Phil.
P.S.
This is your tip for following Laura's blog! Cheers, pdb
Oh yes Ottawa Marathon...I thought you were d__d! I remember how hot that was. I did my first 10 km and I thought I was going die! I wasn't use to the Ottawa warm weather. Only the maritime breezy weather. Good point, I'll have to see if I can do my long runs later in the day, maybe Sat and Sun I'll do that. yes, we need to get you to come in at 4:12 for sure. BOSTON here we come!! :) (well me watching that one :)
